Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia)

Increased amounts of breast tissue in a male is very common. It may surprise you to know that for every 100 females who develop breast cancer, 1 will develop in a male.
There a 3 normal physiological causes of increased breasts tissue that occur at 3 distinct phases of a man’s life. The first is at birth, when mom’s oestrogen is floating around in her new born baby’s blood stream. The second is during puberty and is as a result of the hormonal changes that occur during the stage of life. And the final is during old age when males don’t produce as much testosterone as they did when they were younger.
Any enlarged breast tissue outside of these times is considered abnormal. The causes are innumerable, and can range from liver disease to medications to cancer. However, the commonest cause is idiopathic which simply means that there is no discernible cause, and in the vast majority of cases it is completely benign. However, a thorough examination and blood tests will need to be performed in most cases to exclude any serious cause prior to any surgeries.
Surgery generally involves the removal of the breast tissue and fat, either by liposuction or excision or both. Also the excision of an excess skin which will leave scars in all cases. The extent of the procedure will be determined by the severity of the increase in breast tissue and skin.
